John Heartfield's famous political poster masterpieces are as relevant today as when Heartfield used them "as a weapon" to oppose ignorance, bigotry injustice, and senseless war. Heartfield's political art posters made the pacifist artist John Heartfield number-five on the Gestapo's Most Wanted List. These images appeared on corner newsstands in Berlin as Hitler rose to power. Heartfield refused to leave Berlin until he narrowly escaped assassination when an SS squad that broke down the doors of his apartment on Easter Sunday, April 14. 1933.
